Traditional Music

Traditional music encompasses repertoires and practices passed between generations and continually reshaped through community life. In Mexico it includes sones, songs, dances, ceremonial music, and instrumental forms associated with festivals, work, religious observances, and family gatherings. It does not refer to a single sound: regions and communities have distinct ways of performing, learning, and adapting their music. Recordings in this category make that diversity audible, inviting attention to instruments and voices as well as the settings in which they acquire meaning. A sound document captures a particular performance at a particular moment rather than a definitive version of a living tradition.
