Otomies

Otomí peoples, whose communities use different self-designations including Hñähñu and Ñätho, live across several regions of central Mexico. Their musical practices may include dance repertories, songs, bands, and ceremonial music, with forms shaped by local histories and occasions. Otomí is not the name of a single instrumentation or style shared by all communities. This category groups materials associated with Otomí peoples within the relevant geographic branch. Individual recordings are best understood through the participants’ own names for their community, the locality, language, and the role of music in the documented event rather than through a broad ethnic label alone.
