Zoque peoples maintain distinct cultural and linguistic histories in Chiapas and neighboring areas of southeastern Mexico. Musical practices may accompany community celebrations, dances, ceremonies, and repertoires passed between generations, although they vary by locality. Recordings need to be read alongside their provenance: language, community name, and performance occasion help identify specific traditions. This Mexican Rarities category gathers references to Zoque communities and supports exploration of their relationships with the surrounding region without reducing their music to a broad folkloric label. Where available, field notes can clarify whether a document captures performance, oral testimony, or a related cultural setting.
