Mayo

The Mayo, also known as Yoreme, are an Indigenous people with communities principally in southern Sonora and northern Sinaloa. Musical practices are linked to local ceremonial calendars and may involve singing, dance, percussion, and other instruments whose roles vary by community and occasion. Descriptions of a festival or dance should not be applied indiscriminately to every Mayo recording. The language, place of performance, participants, and event are especially useful for understanding an individual sound document. This category identifies materials associated with Mayo or Yoreme contexts and supports listening attentive to both musical detail and the community setting in which it was recorded.
