Pápago is a historical designation for the Tohono O’odham people, whose communities live in Sonora and Arizona. Vocal and ceremonial practices are connected with territories and communities that predate the present international border. Recordings should distinguish performers’ origins, language, and occasion rather than presenting every sound expression as ritual. This category preserves references appearing under Pápago in older titles or records while contextualizing them through the name Tohono O’odham. Field notes and credits help distinguish community documents, commercial releases, and research recordings. A border-based geographic label does not by itself establish the origin of a repertoire.
