The term Huastec may indicate a connection with the Huasteca region or, in a particular catalog record, with the Tének people. Ethnic identification should not be equated automatically with son huasteco, a genre performed across communities with different identities. The region includes songs, dances, ceremonial practices, and instrumental repertories with distinct local histories. Language, locality, and the terms used by performers help establish the context of an individual recording. This category groups materials identified as Huastec while preserving the distinction between a geographic label, a cultural affiliation, and a specific musical practice.
