Music among the Yaqui or Yoeme people of Sonora is closely connected to communal celebrations and ceremonial cycles. In certain festivals, songs and the sounds of drums, flutes, rasps and rattles accompany dances such as the deer dance and pascola, each with its own forms and functions. This category provides access to recordings identified with Yaqui performers and communities. Documentation accompanying each recording is essential for distinguishing ritual repertories, festive music and performances presented outside their community setting.
