Sonajas

Rattles sound when seeds, stones, beads, or other elements strike one another or the walls of a container. In Mexico they may be handheld instruments, dance accessories, or parts of ceremonial objects, with varied shapes and materials. Their musical function depends on movement, intensity, and their relationship with other ensemble sounds. This category gathers recordings identified as rattles without reducing them to maracas or metal bells. Each recording should document the instrument’s local name, who uses it, and the occasion on which it appears, especially when it forms part of a community dance. Similar timbres can arise from distinct constructions.
