Conquest of Mexico

The conquest of Mexico is a historical process whose musical consequences unfolded through colonial institutions, religious conversion, population displacement, and encounters among Indigenous, European, and African traditions. The surviving evidence is uneven: written accounts, instruments, notation, and later oral practices illuminate different aspects of musical change. A modern recording associated with the conquest does not necessarily reproduce a sixteenth-century performance. This category identifies materials explicitly linked to that historical subject, including interpretations and later representations. Dates, source materials, and the intentions of performers or editors help distinguish historical documentation from contemporary reconstruction or artistic response.
