The teponaztli is a slit drum made from a hollowed wooden body with two vibrating tongues cut into its upper surface. Although it is often called a drum, its sound is produced by the vibrating wood itself, making it an idiophone rather than a membrane instrument. Different instruments may vary in size, pitch, decoration, and ritual significance. Its historical presence in Mesoamerica does not mean that every contemporary performance reproduces an unchanged pre-Hispanic practice.
