This Tzotzil category brings together materials associated with Tsotsil communities in the Chiapas Highlands. Music may accompany patron-saint festivals, religious offices, processions and community celebrations, although ensembles and repertoires vary across municipalities. Flutes, drums, strings and voices need to be understood in the particular context documented for each recording, rather than as a single uniform Tsotsil tradition. Use this section to locate recordings linked to the language, performers and places identified in the archive’s individual catalog records.
