Nationalism offers a way to examine how composers, performers, and institutions have used references to Mexico to construct musical narratives of identity. Quotations of sones, evocations of landscapes, hymns, and concert works can serve very different aesthetic and political projects. A work using traditional material does not automatically represent the community from which that material came. This category gathers recordings connected with nationalism as a historical or artistic theme. Item notes can help distinguish the circumstances of composition, decisions made in arranging a piece, and later interpretations. The term describes a context for listening rather than a single musical sound.
