The Isthmus of Tehuantepec connects musical landscapes in Oaxaca and Veracruz and encompasses traditions of Zapotec, Ikoots, Mixe, Zoque and other communities. Isthmus sones, bands and festive repertories circulate in settings ranging from community celebrations to commercial recordings. This category offers access to regional materials without treating its different languages and cultural practices as equivalent. Locality, performer and date help establish origins and trace changes in repertories over time.
