/ Texts / Mexican Rarities: Preserving Mexico’s Sonic Heritage

Mexican Rarities is a record label and archive dedicated to preserving and promoting Mexico’s sonic heritage. It was officially established on January 13, 2021. Founded by Arturo Castillo and Alfredo Martínez, and later joined by Víctor Garay and Juan Pablo Villegas, this project emerged with the mission of recognizing and highlighting the rich musical diversity of Mexico through various formats, including vinyl records, cassettes, and digital platforms.

A Mission of Preservation

TESOROS MUSICALES DE MÉXICO – Radio Relativa / SHOW / FW23 https://radiorelativa.eu/resident/tesoros-musicales-de-mexico

In a world where music and culture can quickly fade away, Mexican Rarities seeks to create an organized and accessible sonic memory for future generations. The institution not only focuses on contemporary and avant-garde music but also explores the roots of traditional and pre-Columbian music, which are fundamental to Mexico’s cultural identity. This mission is reflected in their research approach, where each sound piece is carefully contextualized within its historical and cultural significance, ensuring a deep understanding of the music’s origins and its role within Mexico’s diverse heritage.

The Sound Archive

The Mexican Rarities Archive boasts an impressive collection of sound recordings, encompassing a wide diversity of genres and styles. From indigenous music and historical corridos to works by iconic composers like Julián Carrillo, recognized for his innovations in microtonal music, the archive represents a treasure trove of Mexico’s musical heritage. However, only a fraction of this collection has been digitized and is available on their online platform, mexicanrarities.com. This digitized material includes photographic documentation and information generated and compiled by Mexican Rarities, as copyright restrictions prevent the publication of audio recordings. The digitalization of these materials is a crucial step to ensure they are not lost over time and can be enjoyed and studied by future generations.

Musical Categories

The collections within the archive are thematically organized into various categories, allowing researchers, students, and enthusiasts to explore the rich diversity of Mexican sound. These categories include chamber music, traditional music, indigenous music, avant-garde, and classical music, as well as a section dedicated to ethnomusicology and rituality. Additionally, the archive recognizes the importance of geographical categories and the music of indigenous peoples, further enriching its content. This organization not only facilitates access to information but also highlights the connections between different musical traditions and styles, fostering a deeper understanding of the country’s sonic heritage. By classifying music according to its geographic and cultural origins, Mexican Rarities pays tribute to the diversity of voices and narratives that shape Mexico’s musical identity.

Musical Production

To date, Mexican Rarities has released four physical productions, including notable albums such as Obrigaggi by Diles Que No Me Maten, ¿Cómo Pasamos la Eternidad? by Gibrana Cervantes, the re-edition of Cromometrofonía No. 1, and Inframundo by Nicolas. Each of these releases not only aims to present new music but also to rediscover and reissue works by artists who have remained hidden over time. This musical production is complemented by two digital releases featuring contemporary artists such as Rodrigo Torres with Onda Tropical and Reifier (Daniela Mandoki), reflecting Mexican Rarities’ commitment to emerging music and the ongoing search for new voices in the musical scene.

Section of Texts and Articles

Additionally, the institution offers a section of texts and articles about the archive and Mexican music, complementing its conservation efforts with a space for research and critical reflection. This section aims not only to inform but also to inspire dialogues about the importance of music in the construction of cultural identity and in the collective memory of Mexico.

Research and Audiovisual Content

Mexican Rarities is dedicated to the research and documentation of various musical traditions, producing content that illuminates the history and cultural significance behind the works they preserve. They have created documentaries about the group Tribu and the community of Mineral de Pozos, where precortesian instruments are crafted. Additionally, they have recorded regional dances and ritual practices, showcasing the importance of music in the everyday and spiritual life of communities. This research not only enriches the archive but also provides valuable context for those who study and appreciate Mexican music.

Mexican Rarities also operates as an online store offering a curated selection of unique sound objects and special collections. Their participation in events such as pop-ups and record fairs allows them to share their vision and collection with a broader audience. Through these activities, they aim to foster a community of musical appreciation that values the sonic diversity of Mexico and engages in the act of listening and discovering.

Contributions to Culture

From an ethnomusicological perspective, Mexican Rarities not only focuses on the preservation of music but also analyzes the social, historical, and cultural context in which it is produced. Its emphasis on musical diversity and commitment to research contribute to a greater understanding of how music reflects and shapes cultural identity in Mexico. By providing a space for academic reflection and cultural dissemination, Mexican Rarities positions itself as an invaluable resource for both researchers and the community at large.

Live Activities and Collaborations

Mexican Rarities is also involved in live presentations that activate the archive in various ways. From the inauguration of exhibitions to immersive culinary experiences in the chinampas of Xochimilco, Mexican Rarities creates events that fuse music, culture, and gastronomy. These projects, carried out in collaboration with like-minded initiatives, seek to explore music not only as an art form but also as a cultural pairing that enriches the senses and connects with Mexican roots.

We participate in academic activities, as well as parties and gatherings in cultural and recreational spaces throughout the city, where music and community intertwine. We are open to collaborations with researchers, musicians, and anyone interested in our project. We believe in the power of working together to enhance our mission of preserving and disseminating the sound heritage.

Additionally, we actively seek and purchase records that are missing from our archive and greatly appreciate donations that contribute to its enrichment. Academic collaborations are especially valued, as they provide knowledge and context to the works we safeguard.

We thank everyone who has contributed to Mexican Rarities, as well as our readers and those who have felt inspired by our project. Together, we work to ensure that the musical richness of Mexico remains alive and accessible for future generations.
